A brief history on decimal time
Decimal time is a modernised way of measuring time that is based on the metric system, with the day divided into ten equal parts. Each part, called a deciday, is equivalent to two hours and twenty-four minutes in the traditional 24-hour system.
The concept of decimal time has been around for centuries, with different variations developed over time. However, the most popular decimal time system was introduced in 1793 during the French Revolution. It was called the French Republican Calendar, and it divided the day into ten parts, each consisting of 100 centidials (1 centidial is roughly equivalent to 14.4 traditional minutes).
Although the French Republican Calendar was abolished in 1805, the idea of decimal time has persisted and has been implemented in various forms in different parts of the world. For instance, in 1998, the internet time system was introduced by Swatch, a Swiss watchmaker, which divided the day into 1,000 beats, each equivalent to 1.44 minutes. The system gained popularity in the tech community but failed to gain widespread adoption.
Today, decimal time is used mainly by scientists and researchers who find it more convenient for scientific calculations. It is also used in some niche industries, such as aviation, where decimal time is used to calculate flight times and fuel consumption.
The main advantage of decimal time is that it makes calculations and conversions between different units of time much simpler - there are no fractions or complicated conversions to deal with. For example, to convert 10 deci-days into hours, you simply multiply 10 by 2.4 (10 x 2.4 = 24). Converting 5 deci-days into minutes is just as easy - you multiply 5 by 144 (5 x 144 = 720).
However, decimal time has not gained popularity in everyday life because it requires a complete overhaul of the traditional time system, which is deeply ingrained in our culture and history. People have grown up using the traditional 24-hour system, and changing to decimal time would create significant confusion and difficulties in adapting to the new system.
