Qlocktwo inspired Apple Watch face

Qlocktwo inspired Apple Watch face

My quest to the edge of nowhere; or was it?

Being a lover of watches, I often spend time online discovering new designs, visual time displays, complications and technologies that underline a watch designer's concepts and implementations.

Several concepts have intrigued me for some time. Two that come to mind are ‘Internet time’ & ‘decimal time’ (an old French time-based system which I think is one of the best and makes the most sense to my warped brain). Both are a curious take on how we process time, visually & mathematically.

I currently rock an Apple watch face (based on ‘Internet Time’) designed by Jessica Stokes https://at-watch.jessicastokes.net which I love.

You can download it here: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/watch/id1440309007

I love to design watch faces using the Clockology watch face designer app and when when my brother (who lives in the USA 🇺🇸) gave me the task of designing a watch face that presented the time without hands or a digital clock; the challenge was on.

(I share my watch face designs with him as he’s a crazy watch ⌚️lover like myself). We have a very different love for design and that is what makes being a watch fan and collector all the more fun.

Finding a new design slant was required

I happened to fall upon a fantastic company based in 🇩🇪 Germany; Qlocktwo. I thought their design would be a great concept that I could try to replicate to win the bet (no money 💰 was on the line, but I bit down on the challenge and had to get under the surface of the mathematical physics behind the face).

The Qlocktwo concept was one I could not live without once I discovered it unless I bought the watch from them (if only, maybe in the future).

I was intrigued by the mathematics behind how the face worked, so I researched how to design and develop one for my daily go-to watch (my Apple Watch Ultra.

Wow, the Qlocktwo design got my brain 🧠 working overtime. I decided to use graphical images that rotate clockwise in seconds. This is where things got complicated.

Designing the required graphics that were needed, the size, and individual positions on the face to display the current time and the positioning of the required words was slow (and I mean slow) but was fulfilling a task that I was willing to spend time doing.

I would not be beaten by my little brother Rob, so I journeyed on. To be fair I was lucky to have a template to follow (Qlocktwo). These guys are very talented designers and must think outside the box to come up with such a cool interpretation of time itself.

I realised that I had to do the same (think differently sounds like an Apple strap line 😉). That said, I am not a developer and I was constrained to what the Clockology app was capable of.

I loved the visual and heart-felt impact the design had on me and made me work relentlessly to make this a reality. Over several nights I got it perfected, but I wanted more.

I was designing it to be put on my Apple Watch Ultra so I wanted to include my go-to complications; my heart rate, weather and battery complications. I was lucky that the spare real estate allowed me to position these on the face.

I think it works, for me anyway. The design is not overly complex and crowded to the eye. It displays the additional complications subtly.

Choosing the colour 🎨 scheme was critical in accomplishing this. Luckily for me, I took Apple’s great eye 👁️ to design and colour schemes by using the international orange and titanium colours. By using the Clockology app it’s possible to change the colouring scheme to suit an individual’s style and watch strap colour(s).

I have to admit. When putting the design images all together I used a Sandmarc titanium watch strap (I got to get my hands on one of them to compliment my watch face).

In conclusion

I think I got what I wanted with regards to the design and not that it’s been mentioned; but I think in my eyes; I won the bet 😉

I hope this will inspire others to design their own faces and come up with individuality that makes their watches stand out from the crowd.

If you would like to get a copy of my face you better be quick, I am only allowing 100 people to download it. I am not looking to make a living from this face, I just want to buy a new laptop, my Apple MacBook Pro died and would like to design future faces on a bigger screen. (This face was 💯 designed only using my iPhone 📱 using several apps and web-based graphic software. It was difficult but just shows what’s possible from an iPhone and a little patience.
